Kim Residence by (fer) Studio:

"Project Scope:
The Kim Residence project is to transform an extensive interior and exterior and a 900 SF expansion of a stream 3 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms single story Ranch-style home in the 1950s. The scope consists of contemporizing inside and out, expanding the current kitchen and living room, adding a bedroom, and the development of landscape. By the way of harmony and contrast, Kim residence emphasizes the splendor of its natural wooded environment

Project :.
Barely perceptible from the street above, the Kim residence of shape environmental study (fer) Studio, is designed to mix foothills in the shadow of the La Canada. Ask wrapped on a slope below the road and in the nut oaks and redwoods, the house is under the folds of his aircraft dark roof, which illuminated from below float above lighted clear stories and hidden windows. This gray standing seam metal roof, a defining feature of this enigmatic property, supplies textural contrast to the black-stained cedar siding, and the softness of the surrounding countryside.

Approaching the residence downward sloping drive, the black basalt columns of a water feature puncture the ground plane of the restrained front entry space. From there, one way of paving stones, placed at intervals with LED bricks, requires visitors directly through the front door. The spine of the house along a north-south axis, which is defined by a glazed open channel using the property that connects the basalt water feature and path at the south entrance organized and in best alignment, the existing swimming pool and a large oak on the north end. Shared deliveries, angles and lines of sight over the house, the transition from the outdoors in, liquid.

The most common areas of the house are located along this primary north-south axis. Through the foyer, on the structured Lada stone wall, the first meeting room is the formal dining area. It is a dramatic downward fold in the blanket. On the adjacent window, which is the front arrival location and wooded house overlooking further defined Billowy pendant lamps emphasize on contrast, the acute angularity of the room and the austerity of the organic color palette, components and furniture, designed to show off the prospect.

Opposite the dining area and through a steel indoor planter is partitioned, spreads the sunken living region. Custom furniture developed by (FER) Studio, in marble, wood and steel, subtly integrated with the structural supply of the house. The origami folds into the ceiling, enhanced by recessed linear illumination, generating significant

public spaces and intimate tucked-away spaces within the larger family area. A tiled gas fireplace incorporates a steel bench that wraps around the room and ends below the image display that define the property's oak frame, at the northern end of the main axis. Bi-fold glass doors open onto an expansive cedar terrace surrounded in redwoods and overlooking the sunken rear garden and pool. A central processing unit which houses the living room TV into a single site and kitchen front on the other side is a separation between the living room and kitchen.

For comparison: The private kitchen, the luxury brand Bulthaup, is one particular of the much more closed locations of residence, but, like the rest of the interior, it is strictly on wood , stone and steel processed. All equipment and accessories are hidden in the all-natural walnut veneer cabinetry to create a seamless modern room. A stainless steel wall unit and matching center island countertop shine under an overhead skylight, descend from the color of globed copper pendant lights and refer to organic light emitting diodes. Is attached to the kitchen, a more casual consume region is encased in glass walls and doors, and gives a feeling of eating outdoors.

The private bodies of the land along the organized secondary east-west axis, escalated in intimacy to the east wing. The workplace, dining room, guest toilet and laundry services that connect to the garage will be summarized on the west side. By far the private east wing contains a bedroom, bathroom and the master bath. The bedroom is fitted anchored by a large double-sided gas fireplace in a striped marble wall that is shared by the master bathroom. An oversized stone tub sits on the opposite side of the fireplace below a panoramic window overlooking the woods outside represents.

In the back garden, [place] -pakshong landscape and architecture collaboration the landscape created by the organic forms of descending to remain hill, in contrast to the rectilinear design and style Property.
unify A common charcoal color palette and shade-loving forest plants range, the house to the surrounding natural context. A simple flagstone comes from the cedar deck behind the plot, first in the hot tub, and finally down to the navy Pool and adjacent stone terrace, of 3 linear pendant lights lit, which seem to float in the evening.

Sustainable Features:
As with all (fer) Studio projects, environmental awareness is part of the core style. Reoriented from the beginning (fer) Studio, the house in order to best take advantage of parasol patterns of Internet site to provide natural heating, cooling and lighting of individual interiors and exteriors. This includes setting up the front entry space and back patio under a canopy of deciduous trees to light and heat during the winter months and cool shade in the warm La Canada summers and the North-South axis clear stories of glass and glass walls maximize all give -natural daylighting in the interior, thereby eliminating the need for artificial illumination during the day.

The Energy Star standing seam metal roof and cool roof reflective paint keep the residence in a lower temperature, reducing energy consumption for cooling by as much as 30% of the outside of the residence and the garage door in Western Red Cedar siding, a renewable resource that is harvested from sustainably managed forests in disguise. The aft deck is also Western Red Cedar. All windows are Low-E Argon filled glass, which also reduces the power consumption by maintaining the residence cooler in the warmer months and warmer during the cold seasons. A water heater is hot water on demand, combating energy losses associated with hot water tank. All interior paint is low VOC and recessed interior lighting is low voltage.

The landscape contains low water plant material and locals integrated low gallons per minute (GPM) irrigation, a smart irrigation controller to respond real-time climatic situations and all exterior lighting is LED, the dramatically less power than traditional lighting consumes "
